Production Story

Film veteran and best-selling author Michael Domeyko Rowland made the decision, aged just twenty-one, to commit his life to raising the level of consciousness within society. Michael is passionate about promoting the idea that life should be lived consciously, with awareness and direction, and not in the dream-like state so common to modern society, where life just “happens” to you. Thirty years later, his film Being in Heaven is a continuation of that goal.

Being in Heaven is a film that has developed from Michael's study of the ancient, fundamental ways of thinking about life. In his globally successful, best-selling book Absolute Happiness Michael revealed that achieving personal fulfilment is not a “secret” hidden away from us – a life of enjoyment, success and wellbeing is available to anyone who is willing to awaken the true self and live consciously.

Being in Heaven , which was written, produced and directed by Michael Rowland, takes the concepts introduced in his book, and illuminates them in a real-life setting through the character of Jason Masterman.

In Jason we witness a familiar story. A man, whose identity is wrapped up in material wealth and professional triumph, suddenly has to reassess what his life is about once the trappings of success are stripped away.

Success, defined in the modern era as the acquisition of material wealth and career achievement, is frequently accompanied by an impoverished internal life – as is the case with Jason. The recent and ongoing global financial crisis has seen this modern model of “success” severely punctured, and millions more people like Jason are now awakening from their own dream, and searching for the true meaning of happiness.

Being in Heaven was made to share Michael's powerful, ancient truths about life with a broad, mainstream cinema audience. Through Martin McGrath's ( Muriel's Wedding, Proof ) beautiful cinematography, George Liddle's ( Dark City, Evil Angels ) beguiling set designs, and Michael's own powerful narrative, the film is a captivating look at the influence our beliefs and experiences have on our lives, and how the path to personal happiness can only be found when we live life consciously.

Being in Heaven was filmed in 2009 at Fox Studios, Sydney, Australia.
